April - Child Abuse Awareness Month

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the importance of preventing and responding to child abuse and neglect. This month encourages communities to come together to protect children and support families in need. Through education, outreach, and advocacy, efforts aim to raise awareness of the signs of abuse, resources for support, and ways to foster safe environments for children to thrive.

In Illinois, key government resources include:

  • Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS): Provides resources for reporting suspected child abuse or neglect, as well as programs focused on child welfare, prevention, and family support.

  • Illinois Attorney General’s Office – Child Protection: Offers information and programs designed to protect children from abuse and exploitation, including resources on recognizing and preventing child abuse.

  • National Child Abuse Hotline (1-800-4-A-CHILD): A confidential, 24/7 helpline providing crisis intervention, information, and support for individuals concerned about child abuse or neglect.
