Vella Speaks Out Against Proposed Trump Tariffs, Passes House Resolution Urging Better Path Forward

Springfield, Il. – Concerned about the impact reckless tariffs would have on local families and businesses, state Rep. Dave Vella, D-Rockford, led passage of a resolution Wednesday condemning Donald Trump’s trade war proposals expected to raise costs on households and put jobs at risk. “Illinois and our region in particular would be hit hard by these misguided tariffs, and families are the ones who will pay the price,” Vella said. “Creating economic pain and instability is irresponsible, which is why we’re calling on the White House to choose a better path forward.”

If fully implemented, tariffs are expected to increase prices on everyday items – including gas, utilities and groceries. Many economists believe the action would spur inflation, and according to some estimates, families could see annual costs rise as much as $2,600 (Peterson Institute for International Economics, Aug. 2024).

Additionally, tariffs are expected to significantly impact Illinois’ agricultural and manufacturing sectors, as well as further cause market instability. According to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), Canada and Mexico are the state’s top export partners. Vella is concerned that longstanding, multi-billion-dollar business relationships that support thousands of Illinois jobs could be put at risk.

House Resolution 119 passed the Illinois House on Wednesday.
